Quick Comparison: 3Dfx Mac Voodoo2 Drivers
Is there any performance difference in the Mac Voodoo 2 Drivers?

It is a photo finish!

Quick Comparison System Specs:

  • PTP 225 (Upgraded to 365/243 Mhz G3 with Carrier Zif)
  • 160 MB of Ram
  • System 8.6
  • 4GB Internal SCSI, 3GB External SCSI, 9GB Ultra2
  • 2- 19" Monitors (IxMicro Twin Turbo, and Xclaim VR)
  • Hot Link PCI Firewire Card
  • Gamewizard Voodoo 2- 12MB

Nothing was changed on the system between reboots to test the games besides changing the 3dfx driver.

No details were given as far as what the beta 2 update addressed, but it is assumed that it was bug fixes. The first beta drivers direct from 3dfx offered SLI and Mike's PC Voodoo3 2000 PCI review. [also see my prev. Voodoo2 review for SLI performance-Mike] shows the performance improvement over the single Voodoo 2 card.

All tests were preformed with Q3Test version 1.08 and Unreal version 2.2.4b4. The results can be seen in the chart below.

Results graph

The tables below shows Q3Test, and Unreal performance with each of the driver/map/resolution combinations.

Q3test 1.08 640x480 800x600
Gamewizard Demo 1: 24.2
Demo 2: 23.2
Demo 1: 23.7
Demo 2: 22.9
3dfx Beta_1 Demo 1: 25.1
Demo 2: 24.0
Demo 1: 24.6
Demo 2: 23.6
3dfx Beta_2 Demo 1: 24.9
Demo 2: 24.3
Demo 1: 24.8
Demo 2: 23.7

Unreal 640x480 800x600
Gamewizard Demo 1: 28.77 Demo 1: 26.98
3dfx Beta_1 Demo 1: 29.28 Demo 1: 28.4
3dfx Beta_2 Demo 1: 29.44 Demo 1: 27.67

Analysis:

All of the results show very little difference in fps. This is most likely due to the CPU and system limited nature of the Voodoo2 Card. Overall though the updated drivers did seem to average between .5-1 fps better than the original Gamewizard drivers.

Next up on the agenda is to compare the upgraded system to the stock 225Mhz 604e that the PowerTower Pro shipped with.
